No Route 66, no Beatle sighting

The entrance at Kokopelli Best Western. Inside the lobby, there were cases of Indian jewelry (the good stuff) which I managed to resist. I'm saving myself for Santa Fe.

We had just decided to change our route, skip Tucumcari, and stay instead in Clayton, New Mexico. Then my friend, Roe, in Chicago emails me to say that Paul McCartney is traveling on Route 66 as we speak!

Our trip yesterday started off slowly. The first three hours were spent in a driving rain (thus the hubby's need for the afore-posted beer). Once in the clear, we looked at the map and decided we could cut an hour off our journey if we cut across Oklahoma and stopped in Clayton. That would mean we'd miss Tucumcari and those great Route 66 motels and diners, but "making good time" was priority one.

Then, Roe writes to say that Paul McCartney (arguably the cutest Beatle) is traveling Route 66 with his new girlfriend, in celebration of his 66th birthday. Drat! Another celebrity encounter missed! Oh, well. Maybe we'll see him down the road.

In the meantime, the Kokopelli Best Western in Clayton was very nice. Room rate included a nice, hot breakfast. We ate dinner at the historic Eklund Hotel and had our first taste of authentic New Mexican food. After dinner, a helluva gully-washer kicked up, turning the streets of town into little rivers.

We must be bringing the rain with us. Let's hope that doesn't continue....
